{"id":408998100,"date":"2013-08-17T11:17:32","date_gmt":"2013-08-17T15:17:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/?p=408998100"},"modified":"2019-12-26T05:52:58","modified_gmt":"2019-12-26T11:52:58","slug":"hilda-glasgow-vintage-fashion-illustrator-biography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/vintage-style\/hilda-glasgow-vintage-fashion-illustrator-biography\/","title":{"rendered":"Story of Style: Hilda Glasgow, Fashion Illustrator for Vogue (1913-2004)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/vintage-style\/hilda-glasgow-vintage-fashion-illustrator-biography\/attachment\/main-image-vintage-fashion-photo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-408998109\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-408998109\" alt=\"main-image-vintage-fashion-photo\" src=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/main-image-vintage-fashion-photo-e1376748234136.jpg\" width=\"540\" height=\"540\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Author Liz Glasgow with her late mother Hilda Glasgow<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not everyday the <strong>daughter of a fashion illustrator for <em>Vogue<\/em><\/strong> emails you out of the blue.<\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s exactly what happened a few weeks ago when Liz Glasgow, founder of The White Cabinet, emailed me to share her mother&#8217;s story of style and entrepreneurship as a fashion illustrator for <em>Vogue<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Mademoiselle\u00a0<\/em>and <em>Glamour<\/em> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/vintage-style\/40s\/1940s-clothing\/\">1940s<\/a> through 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>Liz founded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewhitecabinet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The White Cabinet <\/a>&#8211; home to notecards, invitations, notepads, giftcards, etc. of her mother&#8217;s (now) <a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?icep_ff3=9&amp;pub=5575057215&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337382511&amp;customid=&amp;icep_uq=vintage+fashion+illustrations&amp;icep_sellerId=&amp;icep_ex_kw=&amp;icep_sortBy=12&amp;icep_catId=&amp;icep_minPrice=&amp;icep_maxPrice=&amp;ipn=psmain&amp;icep_vectorid=229466&amp;kwid=902099&amp;mtid=824&amp;kw=lg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vintage fashion illustrations <\/a>&#8211; to honor the timelessness of vintage fashion art and the spirit of style her mother stood for and passionately lived during her life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/01\/10\/hilda-glasgow-vintage_n_1197116.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hilda Glasgow<\/a> was a first generation Russian-American who <strong>trailblazed her way to the masthead of major fashion magazines.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After attending art school at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York City, she skipped the typical jobs of the day (secretary, cashier, nurse) and pushed her portfolio to the top. Her <strong>first illustrations were for <em>Vogue<\/em><\/strong> who, even in the middle of the Great Depression, paid $10 per piece. It was a small fortune &#8211; <strong>the equivalent of $180 today<\/strong> &#8211; and so presumably, her fashion career began.<\/p>\n<p>As Liz writes of her mother&#8217;s tenacious beginnings, <strong><em>&#8220;It was a great lesson in trusting that you\u2019re on the right road.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Keep reading after the jump to learn more about Hilda Glasgow and her positive spirit, style and strong sense of self that not only inspired Liz to found The White Cabinet &#8211; Co. and Bonwit Teller.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/vintage-style\/hilda-glasgow-vintage-fashion-illustrator-biography\/attachment\/cilka-and-lazar001\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-408998113\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-408998113\" alt=\"1920s vintage fashion photo\" src=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Cilka-and-Lazar001-e1376749591511.jpg\" width=\"540\" height=\"801\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Hilda&#8217;s parents (pictured above) were immigrants from Russia, who moved to the United States in 1904.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hilda was a groundbreaker in many ways.\u00a0 Her parents, Cilka and Lazar Richman, immigrated from Russia around 1904.\u00a0 Cilka, born in 1883,\u00a0 also was a woman way ahead of her time.<\/p>\n<p>At 15, in the little town near Kiev where she grew up, she had a corsette business and after coming to the United States, she opened several dress making shops.\u00a0 She had 4 daughters and wanted them all to have careers, but Hilda was the only one who did.<\/p>\n<p>Mom went to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and got her degree in 1933 in Fashion Illustration.\u00a0 She graduated right in the middle of the Great Depression and work was hard to find.<\/p>\n<p>She told her mother that she could take a cashier job at the local Woolworths, but Cilka would hear nothing of that.\u00a0 She kept taking her portfolio around and got her first client \u2013 <em>Vogue<\/em>!\u00a0 They paid $10 a figure, which was a fortune in those days, and her career was started.\u00a0 It was a great lesson in trusting that you\u2019re on the right road.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/vintage-style\/hilda-glasgow-vintage-fashion-illustrator-biography\/attachment\/hilda-glasgow-products-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-408998102\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-408998102\" alt=\"vintage fashion illustrators from white cabinet\" src=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Hilda-Glasgow-Products-1.jpg\" width=\"540\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Hilda-Glasgow-Products-1.jpg 540w, https:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Hilda-Glasgow-Products-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Hilda-Glasgow-Products-1-160x120.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After Pratt, Hilda attended the famous Art Students League where she studied with Rico Le Brun. There she met painter Bernard Glasgow.\u00a0 They married in 1938.\u00a0 He painted and she was the breadwinner, a very unusual arrangement for the time.<\/p>\n<p>She enjoyed her career, but after being married for about 20 years, Hilda decided she wanted to have a child and so, at almost 45, she had me in August of 1958.\u00a0 Today this is fairly common, but not in those days.<\/p>\n<p>In the mid 1960\u2019s she started to slow the work down.\u00a0 She created a poster series of paper dolls called Cut It Outs and then later had a needlepoint business.\u00a0 She also designed jewelry.\u00a0 She lived a happy and healthy life and died at age 91 in 2004.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/vintage-style\/hilda-glasgow-vintage-fashion-illustrator-biography\/attachment\/screen-shot-2013-08-17-at-10-13-01-am\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-408998112\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-408998112\" alt=\"the white cabinet website\" src=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Screen-Shot-2013-08-17-at-10.13.01-AM-e1376749154330.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewhitecabinet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The White Cabinet<\/a> to purchase Hilda Glasgow&#8217;s illustrations<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Her drawings had been hidden away in a white cabinet in her Manhattan apartment for over 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, out of the blue, I decided I wanted the world to see them again, so I photographed everything (I\u2019m a commercial photographer) and started an online store called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewhitecabinet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The White Cabinet<\/a> as that\u2019s where they lived physically, I thought they should reside there online as well.<\/p>\n<p>I started selling custom printed limited edition prints, then added notecards and acrylic stamps.\u00a0 Now, three years later, I am partnered with a Nashville company called Kitchen Papers where we sell various paper products including placemats, notepads, invitations, napkins, notecards and more.\u00a0 In addition to my online store, The Hilda Glasgow Collection is now in over 500 stores including Nordstrom and Paper Source!<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hilda_Glasgow_Fashion_Illustrator_%E2%80%93_Inspiration_%E2%80%93_Positive_Spirit\"><\/span><b>Hilda Glasgow: Fashion Illustrator &#8211; Inspiration &#8211; Positive Spirit\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/vintage-style\/hilda-glasgow-vintage-fashion-illustrator-biography\/attachment\/vintage-fashion-photo-white-cabinet-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-408998106\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-408998106\" alt=\"vintage-fashion-photo-white-cabinet-2\" src=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/vintage-fashion-photo-white-cabinet-2.jpg\" width=\"540\" height=\"707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/vintage-fashion-photo-white-cabinet-2.jpg 540w, https:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/vintage-fashion-photo-white-cabinet-2-229x300.jpg 229w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Author Liz Glasgow with her mother Hilda, who decided to have a full career before giving birth to Liz at age 45.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>On staying positive:<\/strong> Mom had the ability to only look forward.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t dwell on things she couldn\u2019t change.\u00a0 She had a full career when few women did.\u00a0 She had a child at almost 45 in 1958. That didn\u2019t happen much then.\u00a0 She saw life with the glass half full and she trusted her instincts and taught me to take a leap of faith.<\/p>\n<p>Most of her life was against the grain.\u00a0 Career, breadwinner, mother at 45.\u00a0 When she moved to a retirement community at age 84, she still gave art lectures and ran the gift shop.\u00a0 She definitely took the road less traveled.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Her story of style:<\/strong> One of my favorite\u00a0 clothing memories was a mustard colored sued jacket with a woven collar and cuffs.\u00a0 It snapped up the front.\u00a0 It was a really cool casual piece from the early 60\u2019s.\u00a0 Mom was in her 50\u2019s by the mid <a href=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/vintage-style\/60s\/1960s-fashion-style\/\">&#8217;60s <\/a>when fashion went mod.<\/p>\n<p>She loved that clothing.\u00a0 Although she wore very modified versions, she dressed me in fringe vests, mini skirts, chain belts, fishnet tight, white gogo boots and more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/vintage-style\/hilda-glasgow-vintage-fashion-illustrator-biography\/attachment\/vintage-fashion-photo-white-cabinet-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-408998105\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-408998105 aligncenter\" alt=\"vintage fashion photo of fashion illustrator Hilda Glasgow\" src=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/vintage-fashion-photo-white-cabinet-1.jpg\" width=\"540\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/vintage-fashion-photo-white-cabinet-1.jpg 540w, https:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/vintage-fashion-photo-white-cabinet-1-300x141.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Hilda Glasgow&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/vintage-style\/40s\/1940s-fashion-trends-today\/\">1940s style\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>On finding her #powerwithin:<\/strong> Mom was a positive spirit, a loyal friend with a &#8220;live and let live attitude.&#8221; She was very open minded and really enjoyed people who were true to themselves. She hated snobs!<\/p>\n<p>There were certainly challenges for her in starting her career.\u00a0 She just kept moving forward and her perseverance paid off.<\/p>\n<p>She had her share of sadness, like we all do, mostly from the deaths of those around her who she loved.\u00a0 She grieved and then moved forward, remembering the good times.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/vintage-style\/hilda-glasgow-vintage-fashion-illustrator-biography\/attachment\/mom-and-dad-on-beach010-edit\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-408998103\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-408998103\" alt=\"hilda glasgow\" src=\"http:\/\/sammydvintage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Mom-and-Dad-on-Beach010-Edit-e1376748525635.jpg\" width=\"540\" height=\"545\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Hilda Glasgow on the beach with her husband (peeking from the right!)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>On her inspiration today:<\/strong> I try to remember her positive spirit.\u00a0 Her motto was \u201cSometimes you just have to take a leap of faith.&#8221; And I try to do that every day.<\/p>\n<p>She had a small pin that I wear for luck.\u00a0 It\u2019s a black 4 leaf clover with little diamonds at the tips of the leaves and in the center.\u00a0 It\u2019s probably from the &#8217;40s.
